3-day itinerary

Vienna

Stehplatz tickets at the Staatsoper cost €4–12 and go on sale 80 minutes before the performance — this is not a tourist gimmick, it's how Vienna works. This 3-day Vienna itinerary covers Schönbrunn Palace (book the Grand Tour online; the queues without are long), the Kunsthistorisches Museum — the Bruegel collection alone justifies the entry fee — and the Naschmarkt, which is best on weekday mornings when the produce stalls are in full swing. The coffee house circuit at Café Central or Café Schwarzenberg isn't nostalgia; it's the city operating as it always has. Vienna is expensive by Central European standards; budget accordingly.

Day 1

Schönbrunn Palace, the Naschmarkt, and the Ring

Schönbrunn is best in the morning. The Naschmarkt fills the late morning with market energy. The Ring boulevard and the State Opera are the afternoon and evening anchor.
