5-day itinerary
Santorini
Thirassia is the crescent island directly across the caldera from Oia — no hotels, one fishing village, the same caldera view in reverse, and almost nobody there. That's day three of this 5-day Santorini itinerary, reached by caldera boat after hiking the active Nea Kameni lava fields and soaking in the sulphur hot springs. The plan also covers the caldera walk from Fira to Oia on day one (start at 7am, before the heat), Akrotiri on day two — the Minoan Bronze Age city with multi-storey houses, drainage systems, and the original frescoes now in the Fira museum — and a full wine day at Domaine Sigalas and Estate Argyros. For dinner, Imerovigli has the same caldera view as Oia at better prices and far fewer people. August is the worst time to come; May–June and September are the same island with half the crowd.
Day 1
Fira and the caldera walk to Oia
Start in Fira early and walk the caldera path to Oia (10km, 3-4 hours) in the morning light. The view from the path is better than from any terrace. Finish in Oia for the afternoon and the famous sunset.
Fira to Oia caldera walk
ExplorerThe 10km trail along the volcanic rim — through Firostefani and Imerovigli to Oia. The caldera views from the path change at every turn. The Skaros rock (the medieval castle ruin at Imerovigli) is the best side trip. Start at 7am before the heat.

View on mapOia village
EstablishedThe famous village at the northern tip — blue-domed churches, white cubic houses, and the caldera view that defines the Aegean aesthetic. Walk the main lane, the castle, and the steps down to Ammoudi Bay for a swim.

ExplorerThe volcanic harbour 300 steps below Oia — clear water, fishing boats, octopus drying on lines, and a simple seafood lunch at the taverna tables above the sea. Jumping from the volcanic rocks is the local sport.
Explore areaOia sunset
EstablishedThe most famous sunset in Greece — the caldera rim fills with visitors every clear evening. Find a spot on the castle wall an hour early, or watch from the Ammoudi steps below. The entire island turns gold and the caldera catches the colours.
