5-day itinerary

Dubrovnik

Walk the city walls at 8am when they open — the views triple in company by 10am and the light is different entirely. That's the first instruction for this 5-day Dubrovnik itinerary. Beyond the Old Town, the two day trips are the ones that define the trip: Montenegro and Kotor Bay (one hour's drive, a walled medieval city at the head of the fjord, 1,350 steps up to the castle above it), and the Pelješac Peninsula wine road north, where Plavac Mali vines grow on 45-degree cliff faces and the family wineries at Miloš and Bartulović pour the best reds on the Adriatic. The Elaphiti Islands fill day four: Šipan almost car-free, Lopud with the only sandy beach near Dubrovnik. Eat in Lapad Bay — prices are 30–40% lower than inside the walls.

Day 1

The Old City walls and Stradun

City walls first thing at 8am — the views and the light are best before 9am, and the walls are significantly more crowded later. Book wall tickets online the night before.

Dubrovnik City Walls

Established

The 2km 14th-century walls enclosing the Old Town — the best-preserved city walls in Europe. The walk takes 1.5-2 hours. Start at the Pile Gate. The view from the highest point (Minčeta Tower) over the terracotta rooftops to the sea is the defining image of Dubrovnik.

Stradun and Old Town lanes

Established

The marble main street with the Franciscan Monastery pharmacy (operating since 1317), the Rector's Palace, the Cathedral, and the steep lanes of the Grad neighbourhood. Walk slowly; the lanes off the Stradun have the character of the city.

Fort Lovrijenac

Established

The fortress above the sea west of the Pile Gate — the Red Keep location from Game of Thrones. The view back over the city walls from the battlements is excellent and less crowded than the main walls.

Sunset from Buža Bar

Established

The bar cut into the city walls above the sea — drinks on the rocks with the open Adriatic in front and the Old Town walls behind. The most atmospheric bar in Dubrovnik. Arrive for golden hour.
