3-day itinerary
Dubrovnik
Cruise ships dock from 8am to 6pm and flood the Old Town in waves — but they don't walk the walls at opening time. Get there at 8am, when the terracotta rooftops and the sea are lit at an angle that won't exist by 10am and the 2km circuit has almost no other people on it. This 3-day Dubrovnik itinerary pairs that early-morning walk with a ferry to Lokrum (15 minutes, far less crowded than the Old Town, saltwater lake for swimming, peacocks), a day on the Elaphiti Islands, and the practical detail nobody tells you: restaurants inside the walls are 30–40% more expensive than in Lapad Bay, 3km west. May and September are significantly better months to visit than June through August.
Day 1
The Old City walls and Stradun
Walk the city walls first thing in the morning (open from 8am) — the views from the ramparts at golden hour are the best in Dubrovnik. The walls are most crowded between 10am and 4pm. Go immediately after breakfast.
Dubrovnik City Walls
Established2 kilometres of 14th-century defensive walls surrounding the Old Town — towers, bastions, and a continuous walkway with views over the terracotta rooftops to the Adriatic. The walk takes 1.5-2 hours. Start at the Pile Gate entrance.

EstablishedThe marble-paved main street of the Old Town — the Franciscan Monastery (with one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe, still operating since 1317), the Rector's Palace, and the Cathedral. Walk the length of the Stradun and explore the steep lanes on either side.
Explore areaFort Lovrijenac
EstablishedThe detached fortress on the rock above the sea west of the Pile Gate — used as the Red Keep in Game of Thrones. The view back to the Old Town walls from the top is the best there is. Often less crowded than the walls.

ExplorerEscape the tourist restaurant prices inside the Old Town — Lapad Bay is 3km west and has good local restaurants with outdoor tables and harbour views. A bus or taxi from the Pile Gate.
