3-day itinerary

Budapest

The funicular up to Buda Castle is the tourist trap — walk up the steps beside it instead. That minor choice sets the tone for this 3-day Budapest itinerary: Buda Castle and Matthias Church in the morning, the Chain Bridge across to Pest, Parliament (book the guided tour online before you arrive — the interior with the Crown of Saint Stephen is genuinely worth it), and the Széchenyi baths in the afternoon, 18 outdoor pools of geothermal water without a reservation needed. The ruin bars in the 7th district — Szimpla Kert is the original, and still the best — are best on a weeknight if crowds bother you. Budapest is significantly cheaper than Vienna or Prague; you get more for your money.

Day 1

Buda Castle and the Castle District

The Castle District on the hill above the Danube is the historic heart of Buda. Take the funicular from Clark Ádám tér at the base of the Chain Bridge — or walk up the steps beside it. Allow a full morning.

Buda Castle

Established

The royal palace complex on Castle Hill — the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum are inside. The exterior terrace overlooking the Danube and Pest is the best panoramic view in the city. Take the funicular from the riverbank.

Matthias Church

Established

The Gothic church inside the Castle District with its famous diamond-patterned Zsolnay tile roof — extraordinary in the afternoon sun. The museum inside covers the Hungarian coronation regalia. The Fisherman's Bastion beside it is free and one of the finest viewpoints in Budapest.

Fisherman's Bastion

Established

The neo-Gothic terrace built in 1902 as a lookout point and architectural set-piece. Seven towers represent the seven Magyar chieftains. The view across the Danube to the Parliament is the most photographed in Hungary. Free entry to the outer terrace.

Chain Bridge walk

Established

Walk across the Chain Bridge — the first permanent bridge connecting Buda and Pest, opened in 1849. The view upstream toward the Parliament and downstream toward the Elizabeth Bridge from the midpoint is the classic Budapest panorama.

Ruin bar in the Jewish Quarter

Established

The ruin bars (romkocsmák) occupy the abandoned buildings of the former Jewish Quarter in the 7th district — Szimpla Kert is the original and most famous, opening in 2002. The indoor/outdoor space with its decayed-industrial aesthetic is unlike anything else in Europe. Go at 8pm before it fills.
